Dave,

Those are not particularly maglev or high speed.

The rail service envisioned would include passenger trains that could go 110 mph (177 kph) between Raleigh and Richmond.

There is a concrete plan to extend Amtrak’s Acela Northeast Corridor south of Washington - initially to Richmond VA and then on to Raleigh NC. 110mph is about max speed for an Acela (or any other high speed train) on current track, which is what they are proposing to use.

Texas Central intends to use the Japanese Shinkansen trains, in their entirety - no maglev there either. And the Northeast Maglev is (a) no faster than a regular high-speed train and (b) years away. If maglev was so wonderful, why is there only a sungle operating system? (Shanghai airport “demonstration” line, a Chinese prestige project that cost $39.759 million per kilometer to build, that’s about $1.2 Billion for a mere 30 Km.)

Most current high speed trains (China, Europe, Japan) easily hit 200 mph but need special track. If you can afford to buy the ROW between DC and NYC then any technology will produce a 1 hr trip, including Maglev, Shinkansen, or Elon Musk’s tunnel. Amtrak already has a proposal, with maps and $ estimates, on the table. “In September 2010, Amtrak unveiled its plans to upgrade the NEC to a high-speed corridor operating at speeds of 220mph (354km/h). The upgrade is estimated to require a $151bn investment and is scheduled for completion by 2040.” That’s $151 Billion and no funds have been committed yet as far as I know.

There’s a list of info on the Balto. Washington Rapid Rail group seem to be headquartered on Gay St in the old fire house. I just passed on the headline and included sites Pete. But the (proposed)right of way is in place for the group and a bit of the infrastructure is in place and reported on in articles in the Sun over the last few years. Seems a higher ranking official in Maryland has a wife on the board of the foreign company(that wants to invest in the project) which the talks have been going through.

“Baltimore–Washington Superconducting Maglev Project
The Baltimore–Washington Superconducting Maglev Project is a proposed project connecting the United States cities of Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., with a 40 mi maglev train system between their respective central business districts.”

At Kingston station in Rhode Island and Mansfield station in Massachusetts, Acela trains pass by at 150 mph (241 km/h).

When you hear this train coming, it is right on top of you!! Several deaths from people trying to cross the tracks.
