One thing I love about primitive logging railroads in the early 1900’s was the absolute mess they functioned in.

Dead fall and slash was everywhere and had to be a real hazard to the early loggers and their little steam trains. So as I advance the scenery on the mini layout I have been trying to recreate "the mess."Cut up twigs and white glue were used to create the first layer of slash.

Tom,

What are we seeing in that first photo?

The binders are slack like they are just starting to tie down, no chains on the logs in the foreground.

My main question; what is the half buried log in the ditch? Is it a “deadman” for braces (the small logs in the trenches) going up towards the track?

They seem to come in to low to intersect the tie ends, do they butt against the inside rail? You probably can’t answer my question but it sure is an interesting detail for a logging line.

I have been adding in winter bushes with painted lichen. I am going to have to get those loggers in to some winter clothing soon.

Good suggestion Sean. I had thought the treads of the wheels were supposed to shine??? I had used india ink wash on the wheel surfaces. Thanks for looking and commenting. Tom

Planting more winter bushes before bringing in leaf cover and more bare trees. I decided to soften the edge between the forest floor and the limestone cliffs heading in to the Red River.

I have been using some roots from garden plants that died off this summer to make vines and roots heading down to the water to get a drink

Here is a shot from a canoe in the Red River looking up at the log dump. Some of the mischievous kids like to be on the river on hot days to get a big splash from the cascading logs. They do not tell their parents.

I like the colors of winter/late fall set against the grays of the limestone.

Another week of modeling squeezed in to real life. Continuing to work on the log dump scene. More Winter time bushes and roots and vines.

Looks like the loggers have figured out a way to unload the log cars and shove them in to the Red River.

The sticks below the last horizontal log need to be bent down … like a log would do as it is going past them … same with the bushes on either side of the chute!

Or just have a slick looking patch of mud/dirt between the log and rock.

Thanks Sean. Good Point. I tired to model the sticks broken off. But you are right when several hundred pounds of logs go rolling by the existing plant life would be smashed. Doc Tom
